Recently, the FIA revealed plans for the global endurance sports challenge with longer races than before. The plan for the new 2018 season is to include 8 races within 13 ½ months. This is aimed to start at the Circuit de Spa Franco Champions in May, 2018. This new shift is referred to as the ‘Winter Super Series.’ The FIA says these changes should result in cost-cutting for teams. For instance, for the necessary equipment to be transported, air cargo will no longer be used. Instead, shipping by sea will be utilized. This will cut the freight costs by two-thirds.
Surprisingly, Nürburgring, Silverstone, Autodromo Hermanos, the Bahrain International Circuit, Rodriguez, and the Americas Circuit have all been dropped from the schedule. The single added race will be back to Florida’s Sebring Glow for a 12-hour race. Alongside the new calendar of events being announced in Mexico City, was the new rules for the LMP1 group. This was implemented to enhance car tally. A stern decision was made that there will not be a division among the LMP1 cars with fusion and those without fusion. Therefore, there will be no sub-category for the non-fused entities. The only non-fused LMP1 group to race in the 2017 WEC was the Bykolles Race Group.
Significantly, FIA clearly stated that regular and fused gasoline engines will be stabilized. This will grant the groups racing in the non-hybrid LMP1 models, a justifiable opportunity to triumph in the races. Moreover, FIA will introduce an aspect of technology-equality amidst groups racing the naturally geared engines and turbo-charged engines. This unit will eventually operate as the current performance equilibrium system for GTE categories that are completely mechanized.
