Larry Brown Resigns as SMU Basketball Coach

The name Larry Brown is well known by all true fans of the sport of basketball. Brown’s career as a basketball coach has been nothing short of legendary. Brown started in the NBA as a coach of the short-lived 1970’s addition team, the Carolina Cougars. Since those ancient days, Brown has bounced between being an incredibly prominent coach in both the NCAA basketball world and the professional side of the NBA. Brown has received a multitude of coaching awards and is esteemed for turning around losing programs.

After two years with the Charlotte Bobcats, Larry Brown decided to coach the basketball program at SMU. Brown held the position from 2012, but retired in July of 2016.

Brown said that no health problem impeded his future coaching, and that this decision to resign was his own. Brown resigned in the face of a new contract from SMU, and decided that it was time to relinquish his coaching responsibilities.

Brown’s time at SMU will be looked upon as incredibly successful. During his time in that position, Brown managed to post and maintain a very powerful winning record of over 70% of games, with a total college career winning record of over 73% of games.

If Brown decides to stay away from the game moving forward, his legacy will live on in his accomplishments and impression on many players and fans. Brown has been known for sculpting point guards, largely credited for contributing to the game of NBA legend Allen Iverson, who cites Brown as one of the greatest coaches he has known.
