Using a diet that can make you smarter

According to the latest study, adding olive oil or buts to A Mediterranean diet (rich with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish) can keep your mind in a good shape as you age. The study was conducted by Spanish researchers. They found that elderly people who followed this advice, experienced improvements in their memory and thinking. Dr. Emilio Ros from the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, said that a proper diet can delay age related mental decline. In order to achieve this, a person must have a diet rich with antioxidants. The best type of food is nuts and virgin olive.

The average age of participants was 67. S, every person can start with this diet. Dr. Sam Gandy from the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, said that eating less beef, but more fruits, vegetables, fish and chicken, has a positive effect on heart and brain. Because of this, this doctor recommends a Mediterranean diet to his patients. Benefits of olive oil and nuts have been proven in several other studies. They should be used as the reminder that there is much more in a Mediterranean diet than just fruit, vegetables and meat.

The aforementioned study included data of 450 older adults. The data were collected between 2003 and 2009. All participants were at high risk of heart disease, but none of them had problems with thinking and memory. Some of them had to add a liter of virgin oil and others add 30 g of almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts to their diet every week. Others were on a low-fat diet. Both groups who were on a Mediterranean diet improved their thinking and memory.
