Role of Football in the American Culture

American Football holds quite a significant position in the culture of the nation. Sean McAdam has stated that ‘Baseball is still called the national pastime, but football is by far the more popular sport in American society’. This sport has immense popularity in the whole of the United States. The population in the eastern areas of the country along with the rural areas is the ardent fans of professional football. The college football is popular in the Southern parts of the country, especially with students pursuing the graduate or post-graduate degrees.

In 2014, a poll that was conducted by the Market research firm named Harris Interactive concluded that professional football is by far the most favored sport. College football ranked as third in the category. This legacy has been continued since 1985, when it topped baseball for first time. It is the most favored game amongst the students and athletes in high school and colleges. A study in 2012 concluded that there are around 1.1 million football players in high school and 70,000 in colleges of the US.

The game is so popular, that Super Bowl has been considered as an unwritten holiday in the nation. In some regions of the county like Texas, the game is often upgraded to the lines of religion. Some holidays are specially linked with Football like the day of the New Year. This date is famous for many college football events like Rose Bowl. Playing through suffering or sacrificing for the team’s betterment are valued highly in the game culture.
