Paula Radcliffe Criticises Nike For Giving Justin Gatlin New Sponsorship Deal

Marathon icon, Paul Radcliffe, is very disappointed with Nike after giving Justin Gatlin a sponsorship deal.  Under the new deal Justin Gatlin will be wearing Nike kit in the build up to the World Championship which is to be held in August and Radcliffe is not that pleased given the fact that Gatlin was earlier banned for using enhancing performance drugs. She went on to state that, the decision by Nike to award Gatlin a new sponsorship deal does not reflects Nike’s “core values that I am proud to represent”.

Gatlin, who has in the past recorded the three fastest times, last year in the 100m race, has already been banned from the sport two times for doping incidences including a four year suspension that was handed out to him between 2006 and 2010. Gatlin, who has previously been sponsored by Nike, has been wearing clothing from a Chinese company by the name Xtep since he made his return from the ban.

According to a report by BBC, Nike and Gatlin have come to an agreement that will see Nike provide Gatlin with his kit for the next season in the buildup of this year’s 2015 world championship which is to be staged in August. In addition to Gatlin, Nike, which is based in Oregon, will also provide Tyson Gay with kits for the next season.  Gay had been dropped by Adidas back in 2013 after testing positive of a banned substance.

“I am very disappointed to hear this news,” Radcliffe wrote on her twitter account. “I don’t believe it reflects the core value of Nike that I am proud to represent, nor the integrity and ideals of the people I work with on a daily basis. ”
