The withdrawal of Texas Southern

Texas Southern decided to withdrawn from the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament that has as a starting day Wednesday, the 11th of March. This controverted decision has been taken by the team as a self-penalty after 15 players took part at a fight between the Lady Tigers. Later on Monday it was announced that seven athletes from Tigers and eight from Texas Southern have been suspended, as a result of the altercation brought by the match being ruled a double forfeit.

"In addition to the multi-game suspensions handed down from our league office, we will also be imposing some additional measures to ensure that our student-athletes fully understand the severity of what took place on Saturday. With that being said, we're not going to throw in the towel or give up on these young ladies." said in release declaring the school’s agreement, Texas Southern Director of Athletics Dr. Charles McClelland.

The conference sanctioned Texas Southern players Toni Cheadle, Dana Jones, Miracle Davis, Diamonisha Sophus, Morgan Simmons, Ashley Ferguson and Alexus Johnson were all given suspensions minding one game, while Kiana Vines received a two-game suspension. Southern’s coach Sandi Pugh sustained that after re-watching video footage and consulting with the administrators, the best decision is to dismiss one of their players from the team.

The incident occurred on Saturday, with 12 more minutes remained from the game, with Southern leading 51-49. Texas Southerns was thought to be a big force in the contest. After the withdrawal of the Lady Tigers, the champion of the match between Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley advances.
