Pimlico Race Course History

Pimlico race course is a historic one and the home race course for the Preakness Stakes. It is the second oldest racetrack as it was opened on October 25 in the year of 1870. The oldest race course in the nation is Saratoga. Pimlico has hosted many races throughout the centuries and few of them are considered iconic. The famous and legendary horses like Man O'War, Sir Barton, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Citation, Secretariat and Cigar have shown their talent here and left a thrilling and memorable mark.

Pimlico was a result of interesting dinner party proposition which was made by the Maryland's governor who was Oden Bowie. There is an epic history behind this race track. The name "Pimlico" is an area where English men settle, and this term was used in the Colonial Times. Pimlico was engineered by General John Ellicott. It was constructed on the land of west falls in 70 Acres. The land was purchased in $23,500 and the track was built under $25, 00.
